Big Game Bow Hunting
For big game bow hunting, it is advised to use an 80-pound bow shooting an 800-gr
arrow with a fixed-blade broadhead. A minimum of 80 ft•lbs of kinetic energy is
recommended for hunting buffalo and giraffe.
•
Hunting Small and Medium-sized Plains Game Animals: For hunting small and
medium-sized plains game animals, a draw weight of 65 pounds or more and an
arrow speed of 260 feet per second or higher with a 400gr arrow are recommended.
It's important to note that some plains game animals can string jump.
•
Hunting Large-sized Plains Game Animals: When hunting large-sized plains game
animals, it is recommended to have a draw weight of 70 pounds and an arrow weight
of 480 grains or more for optimal penetration.
•
Broadheads: In South Africa, both fixed-blade and mechanical broadheads can be
used. For walk and stalk hunting, mechanical broadheads are recommended.
Choosing a broadhead with a large cutting diameter will provide you with an
increased margin of error and a higher success rate.
•
Nocks: Regular bow nocks are permissible in South Africa. Additionally, the use of
illuminated nocks is legal and recommended, as they provide better visibility of the
arrow's flight and point of impact.
Rifle Rental:
We have a selection of plains game rifles and dangerous game rifles available
for clients to rent. Our rifle range includes calibres from .308 Win to .458 Lott.
•
Limpopo Area Rifle Hunting Recommendations for Plains Game: The average shot
distance in our Limpopo hunting areas is around 150 meters, and shots may not always
be 100% open and clear. Any .30 calibre rifle and larger are suitable for all our plains game
animals. We recommend using a 180-grain soft nose bullet. For optics, we suggest a 3-9
zoom or 3-12 zoom scope, as some shots may be at short distances.
•
Rifle Hunting Dangerous Game: For all dangerous game animals, we recommend a
minimum calibre of .375 H&H mag with a 300-grain bullet. A scoped rifle with low
magnification is preferred, as some shots might be taken in very thick bush and low light
conditions. For buffalo, a core bonded soft nose bullet is recommended. For lion and
leopard, a very thin jacketed soft nose bullet is suitable. For hippo, rhino, and elephant, a
flat nose solid bullet is recommended.
•
